The Sharjah government is studying a proposal to set up a special economic zone and may set up one in 2010, a senior official has revealed.

"Although we have free zones in Sharjah, the government is currently studying the idea of establishing a special economic zone in the emirate. Hopefully, we will start with one next year," Ali bin Salem Al Mahmoud, General Manager, Sharjah Economic Development Department (SEDD), told Emirates Business.

Sharjah already has two free zones and has announced special zones for property developers such as Emirates Industrial City.

"The economic zone will be targeted at attracting small and medium enterprises. It will be a commercial hub, with special incentives offered by the government," Al Mahmoud said, without disclosing the nature of incentives.

According to the SEDD official, the department has forwarded a number of proposals to the government for the economic development of the emirate.
