Saudi Arabia will tender the first phase of a major bus network project in its western city of Makkah next week, according to a media report published on Monday.

"There will be a total of 12 lines in this phase, including five express lines and seven local lines. In the first stage there will be 400 to 500 buses, and 600 to 700 bus stops," the Arabic daily Al Eqtisadiah quoted Ali Abdul Fattah, technical director of Makkah Public Transport, as saying.

He said the network would cover around 55% of the city's residential areas.

The newspaper said that the first stage is scheduled to be completed within 18 months.
