DUBAI (Zawya Dow Jones)--Saudi Arabian Oil Co.'s chief executive officer said total domestic energy consumption in Saudi Arabia will double by 2030 to 8.2 million barrels a day of oil equivalent unless the country improves energy efficiency and diversifies its energy mix, pan-Arab daily Al Hayat reports Tuesday.
Khalid Al Falih told Al Hayat in an interview that total local energy consumption presently stands at 4 million barrels a day of oil equivalent, with 500,000 barrels a day of crude oil used to produce electricity and desalinated water.
"Domestic energy consumption will double by 2030 to 8.2 million barrels a day of oil equivalent in the event that we don't do anything to prevent it," such as taking measures to raise energy efficiency and use alternative energy sources including renewables in the kingdom's energy mix, he said, according to the daily.
Al Falih also said shale gas resources exist in the kingdom but their size and recoverability still need to be determined.
