MUSCAT -- The Omani Studies Centre at Sultan Qaboos University will hold an International Symposium on Omani Role in East Africa from December 11 to 13.

The symposium is aimed at identifying the political, social economic aspects of the Omani presence in East Africa and displaying the geographical factors that supported the Omani presence.

Other aims include studying the Arabic and Swahili linguistic and literary works in East Africa and highlighting prevailing social frameworks such as costume, traditions and lifestyle in Oman and East Africa and displaying the influence of both cultures.

It is expected that the symposium would identify the status of manuscripts, documents and archaeologies pertaining to the Omani historical presence in East Africa.

The symposium sessions will cover history, geography, language and literature, social aspects, media and journalism, and documents, manuscripts and monuments.

Under the theme "Media and journalism", the history of press and journalism in Zanzibar and East Africa will be covered.

The deadline for submitting proposals is May 19. Symposium languages are Arabic and English. Presenters can send their proposals online via symposium website.
