Muscat: SMN Barka has confirmed to the Public Authority for Electricity and Water (PAEW) that the Barka 2 plant reached full water production capacity yesterday. The desalination unit of the plant was stopped last Saturday due to a fracture on a water pipe that occurred late afternoon, said a company release.

Teams from Suez-Tractebel Operation & Maintenance Oman (STOMO), the plant operator, were immediately mobilised and after inspection of the damages, a two-phased repair plan was devised, the sole aim of which was to limit the downtime of the plant. Thanks to the fast intervention, the pipe failure was repaired within a short time. Johan Van Kerrebroeck, CEO of SMN Barka, thanked the STOMO teams for their hard around-the-clock work to solve the problem and for the expertise and efficiency they demonstrated.

SMN Barka and STOMO have been continuously in contact with PAEW, whose representatives were on site to monitor to ensure proper coordination. This close co-operation highly contributed to the efficiency of the operation and limited the impact on the water supply. In 2012, Barka 2 produced 42,686,522 square metres of desalinated water, representing 102.59 per cent of what the plant is contractually required to produce. The current production for 2013 is 13,270,836 square meters or 104.48 per cent of the contractual production requirements, despite the recent outage. These numbers illustrate that both SMN Barka and STOMO are highly committed to contribute to PAEW's efforts to secure the Sultanate of Oman's water supply.
