DOHA: Work on a rapid transit system for public buses in Qatar will begin in seven months, according to a senior official of Mowasalat.
The first phase of the project includes special lanes for buses parallel to the Salwa Road and the Industrial Area.
"Tenders for this project will be invited in two weeks and the work will begin in seven months. The project is scheduled to be completed in three years," Nasser Al Khanji, director of strategic planning at Mowasalat told the 59th International Association of Public Transport (UITP) Congress and Exhibition that opened in Dubai on Sunday.
Ahmed Al Ansari, Business Developmment Director at Mowasalat said, the political turmoil in the Arab world, coupled with the global financial crisis had posed new challenges for the development of a safe mass transit system in the Middle East.
