MUSCAT -- The Port of Sohar annual magazine has now reached it's fifth edition. Each year it has grown in size in terms of recording strong progress in this 50:50 joint venture between the Government of Oman and the Port of Rotterdam. The OEPPA is the port's publishing partner in this magazine venture and the 120 pages in this edition chart the progress made on so many fronts.

A major article underlines the size and significance of the Brazilian mining giant, Vale to the development of the national economy. It has made Oman the Middle East headquarters of it's world-wide operation and in the process is contributing substantially to the national economy. Vale with it's huge stockyard and deep water jetty is investing $1.35 billion.

Looking down the list of those contributing to Sohar Port's expansion is very much like looking at a list of all the firm's driving the expansion of the whole economy.

Whether it is the petrochemicals, metals or logistic clusters the big names, which have very much helped in the expansion of the economy over recent years are all there.

This magazine is thus highly important for all those, who want to know more about the national economy and it's further expansion.

International endorsement comes from the Port of Rotterdam which following it's successful joint venture with Sohar Port is speedily developing other international partnerships.

In the next five years the Port of Rotterdam is looking at four new international participation and 10 strategic partnerships.

Significantly three of the nations major banks, Oman Arab Bank, BankMuscat and National Bank of Oman describe how important the expansion of the whole Sohar development is to their own overall expansion. Global forwarding carrier DHL with a network covering over 150 countries points to it's growing expansion and activity in the area,.

Nawras is playing an increasingly important role in providing business solutions to many of the firms operating in the port area. It has been expanding it's footprint in the port since it launched fixed services for business in 2010.

A new entrant this year is the giant contracting company from the UAE, which is clearing the way for the new Sohar Free Zone SFZ, Al Naboodah Contracting LLC.

When it comes to the longstanding supporters of the Omani economy companies such as Zubair, Suhail Bahwan and Saud Bahwan have been major participants in the expansion of the port.

The petrochemicals cluster includes the world scale Sohar Refinery, Oman Polypropylene, Aromatics Oman, Oman Methanol Company, Sohar International Urea and Chemical Industries plus Air Liquide, the international supplier of industrial gases, all have a prominent role.

Important this year has been the creation of Jindal Shadeed, a vast very modern plant set to make the standard for many future developments in the steel industry. It is ahead of schedule and creating a significant number of highly skilled jobs .

The standards of a port are rightly measured in the quality of it's terminals and here it can offer three terminals of outstanding international reputation and integrity with Steinweg, Oiltanking and Odjfell. plus OICT, offering internationally famous names, which have pursued their constant quest for excellence in Sohar.

First to be built was Steinweg, the general cargo terminal, which has brought in the shipments that have made the port possible. It launched in 2004 and it's successful development has made the major expansion possible.

Oiltanking Odjfell has been able to report a substantial expansion in it's liquid terminals business and during the course of this year is expected to expand it's facility considerably. The services of OICT continue to expand.

Maritime education has been a major point of focus with the opening of a campus and facilities in Sohar for the International Maritime College of Oman.

It's relocation from temporary quarters in Muscat is seen as a major development since Sohar is now the place where Oman's future mariners learn their trade.

IMCO, the magazine reports now has a regional significance since would be mariners from many nations are coming to Sohar to learn the secrets and skills of their trade.

Service providers such as Majis Industrial Services, which sets very high standards in water utilities and the leading local hotels, the Sohar Beach and the Crowne Plaza Hotel set out their attractions for the many, who now come from all over the world to do business in Sohar.

GAC, which established itself as a shipping agent in 1971 mow has a very thriving business in Sohar. It concentrates in Oman on providing highly complex logistics solutions.
