Summit on petrochemicals technology highlights the current status and future trends in the global petrochemicals industry

The 5th edition of the Global Petrochemicals Technology Summit opened yesterday at the Sofitel Dubai Jumeirah Beach in Dubai, UAE. Discussing the latest updates and technologies in the petrochemicals industry, the event saw participants from across the globe sharing their views and experiences.

The first day of the event started with the opening remarks of the chairman Pascal Coenen, Licensing Technical Manager, Shell, followed by the keynote address delivered by Mohamed Al Hazmi, Director Performance Chemicals, SABIC. Speaking about evolution technologies and success stories at SABIC, Dr. Al Hazmi highlighted the current status and future trends in the petrochemicals industry. Addressing the delegates on the latest Borealis Borstar® PE and PP technologies which enable creation of a unique value-added polyolefin product portfolio was Mauris Van Tol, Vice President Innovation and Technology, Borealis Group.

Interesting the audience with state of the art polyolefin technology, Marc Narmon, Global Director, Technology and Licensing, Total Refining Group, listed the applications of value adding polyethelyne resins produced by ground breaking polyethelyne processes. The global dip in oil and gas prices and their impact on the GCC petrochemicals industry has been a widely discussed topic in the recent times. Meshal Al Samhan, Head of Petrochemical program, discussed the implications of low gas prices on GCC petrochemical industry expansion.

The petrochemicals industry is looking for technological innovations to utilize the available feedstock to its optimum capacity - producing specialty chemicals and enhancing the quality of existing products. Santosh Gangwal, Director Southern Research Institute intrigued the delegates with sessions on alternative feed-stocks to meet the current challenges in feed-stock availability. Also, Gangaram Vijaykumar, Lab Expert, SEEF Ltd., shared his insights on sulfur analysis with multi analytikjena analyzer.

The day ended with a panel discussion on strategies for emission control in a petrochemical plants. The panelists shared their views on global best practices being followed to help control the emissions, changes in the processes in order to adhere to the environmental norms and the future trends that the industry should consider to formulate their emission control strategies.

The day two of the summit today saw the keynote address by Khalid Al Hamid,  Engineering & Technology Manager , Sadara Chemical Company, discussing the effect and impact that Sadara has created in the Middle East petrochemicals industry. Other sessions for the day will discuss shale development and its impact on the global market, enhancing the performance of a petrochemical plant to ensure operational excellence and role of technology & catalysts in a new era for Middle East petrochemicals to name a few.

Experts representing leading companies such as Shell, PIC, Reliance Technology and SINOPEC will address the attendees with these intriguing topics. The summit will end with a panel discussion on  supply chain strategies to compliment the production capabilities. The panelists will discuss strategies to ensure that the supply chain system is in tune with the production capabilities and market demands. The event sees support from leading solutions providers like Albemarle Corporation and Nash.
