MUSCAT -- The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) launched here yesterday its nationwide awareness campaign "My Number...My Identity". The press conference, addressed by Hilal O Al Siyabi, Media & Consumer Affairs Manager, TRA, was attended by representatives from local media and telecom operators in the Sultanate.
Al Siyabi said My number, My Identity awareness campaign aims to educate mobile users to use registered identified sim cards only.
"Users should also understand the legal liability which may arise from giving their sim cards to others. Fake registered sim cards might be used to disturb others", he added.
The campaign to be carried out through radio, television and newspapers will emphasise that "your SIM card is your responsibility: even if you give it away to someone else you remain legally liable in case of its misuse.
"If you give away your SIM card, make sure you complete the necessary official transfer of registration of the SIM card to the new user.
"Cancel all SIM cards that are registered in your name if they are being used by someone you do not trust.
"Educate your family, relatives and friends on the legal consequences which may arise in case of giving their number to other users.
"All residents and visitors are advised to cancel their SIM card registrations with their service providers on leaving Oman", said Al Siyabi.
The target audience for the campaign are all mobile users, including citizens and residents in Oman.
The objectives include spreading awareness among all mobile users to use registered identified SIM cards and understanding the legal liability which may arise from giving their SIM cards to others.
