MUSCAT -- The increase in national manpower employed at the private sector is quite modest as compared to that of expatriates. Compared to last year, this year the number of national manpower at the sector increased by a mere 0.3 per cent against a 10 per cent rise in expatriate manpower, according to statistics.

The number of Omanis in the first half of this year stood at 174,941 compared to 174,441 citizens by the end of the corresponding period in 2011, a difference of 500 workers in six months!

Statistics show that the number of expatriates recruited by the private sector during the first six months this year increased to 1,230,000 compared to 1,115,000 workers employed during the corresponding period in 2011. The statistics also indicate that 918,000 expatriates working for the private sector are holders of Preparatory or Primary School Certificates or no qualifications at all, while 200,000 carry Secondary Education Diplomas against 100,000 holders of university degrees and 3,730 holders of Masters and PhDs.

The figures show the crisis being witnessed by the labour market due to Omani youths shunning work at the private sector. The Council of Ministers attaches special importance to the challenges of employment of citizens as per the council's last statement. Meanwhile, the Manpower Ministry made steady strides in enhancing the role of labour inspection towards the full enforcement of provisions of the Labour Law and ministerial decisions implementing it, said Shaikh Abdullah bin Nasser al Bakri, Minister of Manpower.

The ministry stresses the support of human resources to help improve the process of inspection and adherence to the Labour Law's provisions in different governorates. The Ministry also seeks to streamline procedures and grant more powers to the Directorates of Manpower in governorates. This came in a statement by Hamad bin Khamis al Amri, Under-Secretary of the Manpower Ministry for Labour Affairs, when he met here yesterday with Dr Mohammed bin Hafeedh al Dhahab, Manpower Ministry's Adviser.
