Tehran and Moscow signed a preliminary contract worth $10 billion to establish eight power plants in Iran, said the energy minister on Tuesday.
Hamid Chitchian said two power plants will be set up in Tabas (South Khorasan province), two in Tabriz (East Azarbaijan province) and four in Bandar Abbas (Hormuzgan province), Mehr News Agency reported.
He noted that concurrent with the visit of Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak to Tehran, the two countries signed an agreement on the construction and renovation of a number of thermal power plants in Iran.
Chitchian said Iran and Russia has set up the required infrastructure.
"The Energy Ministry welcomes Russian collaboration and investment in Iran's power industry."
The minister noted that Russia has announced its readiness to set up 2,800 megawatts of power plants in Iran.
"The Russian companies are to present their final proposal in this respect to the Energy Ministry," he said.
Chitchian added that Ramin in Ahvaz, Khuzestan province, and Shahid Montazeri in Isfahan are the first two power plans to be renovated by Russian firms.
"The two countries will soon finalize the contracts," he said.
Last week, Iran and Russia signed three trade MoUs on the sidelines of Novak's visit to Tehran.
Speaking in a meeting with Novak and his delegation on Tuesday, Chitchian said each of the thermal power plants will have a capacity of 350 megawatts (MW) of electricity.
He said Iran is interested in Russian collaboration for carrying out the feasibility studies of Bandar Abbas power plant.
On purchasing electricity from Russia, Chitchian said that in the latest trilateral meeting attended by Iran, Russia and Azerbaijan, the possibility of executing the plan was studied and it was decided that a new pipeline is required in Azerbaijan.
Speaking in the same meeting, Novak said the two countries have the potential of promoting cooperation in exchanging techno-engineering services and Russia is ready to construct power plants for producing 3,000 MW in Iran.
