Production of stone fruits will cross 200,000 tons across Mazandaran province, said managing director of Mazandaran Horticulturists Association.

Mohammad Reza Sha'bani put the area under stone fruit cultivation at 14,000 hectares.

He explained that the harvest of stone fruits has begun in Mazandaran and will continue until Aug. 22.

Sha'bani said horticulturists need low-interest loans.

He noted that Agricultural Jihad Department and Horticulturists Association would give subsidized saplings to horticulturists to support fruit production in the current Iranian year (started March 21).

Sha'bani said the failure to get proper saplings of peach and nectarine is a problem.

"Horticulturists should have access to comprehensive data about modern horticulture," he said.

Although Iran, based on figures released by FAO, is among the world's top ten countries in terms of fruit and vegetable production, high prices deter low-income strata from consuming fruit.

FAO figures show Iran is the seventh largest fruit producer in the world.
