Hodariyat Bridge biggest of its kind in UAE

Monday, Jul 23, 2012

Abu Dhabi: The Tourism Development and Investment Company ( TDIC ) announced on Sunday the completion of Hodariyat Bridge, which links Abu Dhabi city’s western coastline to the Hodariyat Island. The new infrastructure has been handed over to the Department of Transportation in Abu Dhabi.

The 1.3-km-long bridge provides a 29-metre vertical clearance with six lanes for traffic and two walkways. The bridge is the biggest of its kind in the UAE with a height that allows ships to pass underneath it, the TDIC said.

Work on the bridge began in October 2009 and it came to completion after a total of 5 million man hours. The construction cost of the bridge has not been revealed.

“The completion of Hodariyat Bridge marks an important milestone in the island’s history as it will facilitate its future development. It also marks another milestone for TDIC , as we successfully completed the project ahead of schedule,” said Nabeel Al Kindi, chief development officer at TDIC .

The handover of Hodariyat Bridge to the Department of Transport in Abu Dhabi follows on from the recent completion of the Al Bateen Beach project by TDIC , which is located in close proximity to the bridge. The Al Bateen Beach project, which consists of a beachside park and a number of amenities for visitors, was completed in January and handed over to Abu Dhabi Municipality and was opened to the public in March.
