ERBIL - An Emirati company has contracted with Iraq to invest in the free zone in Khor al-Zubair, Basra province.

The general authority of free zones that belongs to the Ministry of Finance said in a statement that it contracted with ALE company to invest in a service project in the fields of shipping, unloading, handling and transport at the free zone directorate in the Khor al-Zubair. The project will cover an area of more than 4,000 square meters.

The general authority also contracted with local company Aaly to invest in the areas of importing and exporting manufactured materials, equipment, raw materials, foodstuffs and chemicals in the free zone covering an area of more than 2,000 square meters.

The Iraqi Finance Ministry signed this month a contract with Italian company M.G.M. Lines to establish two commercial and service projects in the same area.

Khor al-Zubair is one of the major industrial areas. In addition to Khor al-Zubair port, the area includes a group of laboratories and companies, such as a petrochemical plant and a fertilizer factory.

Iraq has two other operating free zones, one in Nineveh, Flayfil and another in Qaim, Anbar province.
