UAE businessman Mohamed Alabbar said on Sunday that Donald Trump’s election as U.S. president would not impact business relations between the two countries since the United States has strong institutions to safeguard the country’s interests.

Earlier this year, Alabbar told CNN that Trump’s comments during the campaign about banning Muslims from entering the United States were “ridiculous” and described the American presidential race as “hilarious”.

On Sunday, the Dubai billionaire said he had faith in the American people.

“I believe that the Americans ... have great institutions that know what is best for America,” Alabbar told reporters in Dubai.

“Of course I got offended by some of the comments that the president has put out. Now they could be comments for elections purposes, I have no idea,” he said. “I think political rhetoric is one thing and doing the real business is one thing. Is he different? Of course he is different, but in today’s world everybody is different. That is okay.”

Alabbar, who chairs developer Emaar Properties, builder of the world’s tallest tower Burj Khalifa and The Dubai Mall, was speaking on the sidelines of a news conference to announce a $1 billion online shopping venture in the Middle East.
