Director of planning and development at National Petrochemical Company (NPC) has described the southeastern port of Chabahar as the new hub of Iran's petrochemical industry, saying the region is slated to produce 15 million tons of petrochemical products.

Referring to experiences from the construction of petrochemical units in Mahshahr and Assalouyeh in Bushehr Province, Ramazan Owladi said petrochemical units of Chabahar have been designed to produce intermediary products instead of exporting ethylene or methanol, Shana reported.

"Achieving 15 million tons of petrochemical production calls for an investment of $20 billion, he said, noting the petrochemical zone needs 20 million cubic meters of gas daily and 3.6 million tons of ethane per year as its feedstock.

Stating that natural gas feedstock would be provided by the Iran's seventh gas trunk line, the official said the pipeline currently extends to Iranshahr city.

He added the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) has signed relevant contracts to extend the pipeline to Chabahar in the next two and a half years.

A 24 to 28-inch pipeline will be laid between Assalouyeh and Chabahar in the next 36 months to provide ethane as feedstock.

According to the official, a number of private companies has expressed their readiness to implement the pipeline project.

Turning to the land for establishing Chabahar petrochemical units, Owladi said three thousand hectares will be needed for this. Of this, he said, one thousand hectares will be assigned to development of new phases, one thousand hectares for setting up upstream units and one thousand hectares for development of intermediary and downstream units.
