AMMAN -- The Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) on Tuesday said it had completed a renovation and expansion project on the Aqaba Tourism Information Centre (TIC) to attract more tourists to the facility.

The TIC provides visitors with information about archaeological sites and other tourist attractions in Aqaba as well as logistical support, according to Thelma Radwan from ASEZA's Tourism Department.

The centre, which was established in 2005, has since served tens of thousands of tourists, according to official figures.

In 2011, British tourists were the most frequent visitors to the TIC, with some 2,500 using the centre, followed by 1,645 Germans, 1,642 French, 974 Belgians and around 900 Jordanians, ASEZA said in a statement made available to The Jordan Times.

The TIC is now ready to receive greater numbers of tourists and is expected to play a bigger role in attracting visitors to the Red Sea resort, according to Radwan.

Minister of Tourism Nayef Al Fayez and ASEZA Chief Commissioner Nasser Madadha are expected to inaugurate the centre today.
