AMMAN, May 14 (KUNA) -- Amman is hosting a regional training program as of Monday, May 14, on implementation of measures to guarantee "Safe Transport of Radioactive Material" organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in cooperation with the host state's Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
Kuwait is one of eight countries taking part in the event with a delegation comprising representatives for the Nuclear and Radioactivity Safety Department of the Health Ministry Salem Al-Azmi and Hasan Shams.
Al-Azmi told KUNA the program includes lectures by IAEA specialists and experts on proper implementation of radioactivity safety guidelines and on self-assessment of success in this regard. Over two weeks, he said, the participants would discuss transport of radioactive material, as well as manufacture, maintenance and storage of containers for such material, and emergency response and international obligations and standards in this regard, among other issues.
Shams meanwhile said the program would shed light on international standards and the participants would greatly benefit from discussion and training on limiting threat to population and environment where there is any activity involving use of radioactive material.
Director General of the Jordanian Nuclear Regulatory Commission Jamal Sharaf who inaugurated the event this morning had said the program is part of regional IAEA activity on improving specialized staff's capabilities where radioactive and ionized material is concerned, with special focus on guarantees during transport.
The participants in the event represent authorities from Kuwait, Jordan, Iraq, Oman, Qatar, Syria, Palestine, and Yemen.
