RIYADH: Tokyo is looking forward to strengthening and expanding security cooperation with Riyadh for strategic purposes, according to a Japanese official.

The official said that Mohammed Al-Jafari, deputy head of the Saudi Shoura Council, discussed the issue at a meeting with Taro Kono, chairperson of the National Public Safety Commission and also the minister in charge of Administrative Reform, in Jeddah recently.

The two discussed a wide range of issues of common interest and explored ways to promote parliamentary relations between the two countries. The cooperation, he said, includes exchange of information in the battle against terrorism and dismantling the terror infrastructure.

Japan continues to expand a comprehensive partnership with Saudi Arabia in various fields, he noted.

The meeting was aimed at strengthening bilateral relations in terms of fight against terrorism and sharing views on several critical issues in the Middle East region.

They pledged to move forward in working together for the sake of stability in the region and to eradicate terrorism. The results of this meeting, the official observed, reflected positively on international peace and security.

He said that official Japanese negotiations with a number of senior Saudi officials will extend until Sunday, stating that it comes within the framework of coordination and consultation between officials of the two countries on major issues. He pointed out that the region's crises and conflicts in Syria, Yemen and Palestine are part of these discussions.

The official, who spoke on anonymity, said Saudi Arabia is an important country in the region and has extensive experience in the field of fighting terrorism, which has now become a global phenomenon and which has no religion. It is threatening international peace and security, but it is certain that cooperation between Tokyo and Riyadh in this area will yield some positive results in the world in general and the Middle East in particular.

He pointed out that Tokyo is willing to cooperate with Riyadh in strengthening peace and security in the region, noting that there is a genuine Japanese desire to achieve a degree of strategic partnership at the bilateral level between the two countries, as well as political cooperation that will contribute to the restoration of stability in places that have been in conflict for years, such as Syria and Yemen.

The source explained that there is an agreement in many of the visions and ideas on many issues of common interest, as well as issues of concern in the whole Middle East region and the world, stressing the need to take advantage of information and experiences of countries in combating terrorism and contributing to international peace and security.
