The world-renowned Moscow City Ballet will perform Romeo & Juliet at the Dubai Opera from April 19 to 21.

The ballet version of the much-loved Shakespearean tale was first completed in 1935 by acclaimed Russian composer Sergey Prokofiev, but only first performed as a complete ballet in 1938. Set against the backdrop of Renaissance Italy, Victor Smirnov Golovanov’s interpretation of the romantic tragedy is blended with the musical score by Prokofiev and led by principal dancers Yulia Zhuravleva (Juliet) and Dmitry Lazovik (Romeo).

Founded in 1988 by Russian choreographer Victor Smirnov-Golovanov, the Moscow City Ballet is renowned for the perfection of its corps de ballet in the best traditions of the Russian school of classical ballet. One of Russia’s most extensively toured ballet companies, the Moscow City Ballet has performed at iconic venues across the world.

“I am so looking forward to enjoying the world’s greatest love story performed by a great Russian ballet company and a fantastic live orchestra in the splendour and intimacy of Dubai Opera. From the moment they meet to their tragic final embrace, Shakespeare’s story of Romeo and Juliet accompanied by Prokofiev’s score is a favourite with audiences young and old around the world,” said Dubai Opera chief executive Jasper Hope.

Tickets will go on sale September 20.
