Sharjah

IndiGo airlines will launch its first flights from Kerala to Sharjah on Monday, marking the low-cost airline’s second entry into the UAE after Dubai.

From Monday, IndiGo will fly daily non-stop return flights between Sharjah and Kozhikode, also known as Calicut. The airline also plans to fly daily return flights between Sharjah and the Kerala capital Thiruvananthapuram from April 8.

One-way tickets for both destinations will cost Dh242-245.

The two new routes aim to serve the growing number of business travellers and tourists between the Gulf and India, said Sanjay Kumar, IndiGo’s chief commercial officer.

IndiGo is “looking at providing affordable fares on these new routes,” Kumar said.

“[The] Middle East has been an important market for IndiGo. With rising business and tourism stemming from the Gulf market, IndiGo is determined to provide the best travel experience,” he added.

The airline claims to be one of the most punctual airlines in India, and runs a fleet of 129 Airbus A320 aircraft which make 883 daily flights to 44 destinations. The airline also claims to have captured around 40 per cent of India’s aviation market.

Sharjah is IndiGo’s sixth route outside of India. The airline also runs international routes to Muscat, Singapore, Bangkok and Kathmandu.
