Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) said on Sunday that its installed power generation capacity will touch 13,200 megawatts (MW) in July with the commissioning of the 300 MW first stage of Phase 5 of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park.

In April 2020, DEWA had announced that the 900 MW Phase 5 will use photovoltaic solar panels and be commissioned in stages starting from the third quarter of 2021.

DEWA’s said in a press statement that its current installed capacity stands at 12,900 MW of electricity and 490 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD) of desalinated water.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA said the utility is also implementing a 7-billion UAE dirham ($2 billion) Smart Grid programme that will be completed by 2035.

“Electricity infrastructure expansion plans are developed based on demand forecast in Dubai until 2030, considering the demographic and economic growth in the Emirate. Despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic on the global economy, Dubai continues to grow and develop, consolidating its position as an attractive environment for global investments,” said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.

Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 aims to provide 75 percent of Dubai's energy requirements from clean energy sources by 2050.
