Dubai, UAE: Dubai Land Department (DLD) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with The Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) under which the parties will coordinate as necessary in the field of professional standards in the public interest of Dubai.

The MoU was signed during IStructE’s annual conference, held for the first time in the Arab world in Dubai on 29 – 30 September at the Radisson Blu Hotel. The conference witnessed the participation of some of the best structural engineers in the world.

HE Sultan Butti bin Mejren, Director General of DLD, said: “We continue to spare no efforts to find the best partners around the world, ensuring that we continue to showcase our position, especially as Dubai has become a hub of excellence in all sectors. Through this partnership with IStructE in the UK, we will work to develop the skills of our engineers by providing them with a membership to the most prestigious and specialised institution, in addition, to cooperate to share Dubai’s experience with other countries, thus opening the prospects for collaboration with more countries in the future.”

Martin Powell, CEO of IStructE, commented: “IStructE has many members throughout the world and is especially proud of the contribution of those based in the UAE. We are always pleased to develop new relationships, and supporting DLD to enhance the professional skills of its engineers is an important step in the development of both organisations. Together, we are most definitely stronger in the service of our respective communities.”

IStructE, which cares for the advancement of structural engineering as a profession and qualifies a selection of engineers all over the world, will support the efforts of DLD’s engineers by providing them with the membership to raise the efficiency of the professional staff at DLD. Under the agreement, which recognises Dubai’s global position in terms of engineering, the two parties will organise joint events and, if necessary, strengthen cooperation with other countries.

Majid Saqr Al Marri, CEO of the Registration and Real Estate Services Sector at DLD, said: “The signing of this MoU is an affirmation of the prestigious position that Dubai has reached, having become an international city renowned for its distinctive architectural character, which is evidenced by the presence of several landmarks that have gained wide global reputation. In Dubai, we are constantly challenging expectations and exceeding the limits of excellence, which helped us lead in innovation indicators in the field of construction, thanks to the vitality of the construction engineering sector in the Emirate and its role in its continuous development. The new agreement with IStructE will help transfer expertise and share the best experiences to upgrade construction practices in Dubai to the highest international standards.”

Both parties expressed their keenness to maintain health, safety, and the public interest, where each party will contribute to strengthening Dubai's position in this field and be able to use their facilities to organise events. The parties also agreed to work together to promote urban planning, land use, and climate change between the Government of Dubai and the UK. This includes coordinating the exchange of professional knowledge with engineers regarding continuous education and professional qualifications for the benefit of engineering work in Dubai. The parties also agreed to exchange professional publications for their benefit.
