Starting the year with monumental achievements:

Abu Dhabi – with a comprehensive planning and effective implementation, “Tadweer” (The Center of Waste Management - Abu Dhabi) has accomplished many milestones in 2017 in line with its strategic objectives in achieving integrated waste management and contributing to the objectives of emirate of Abu Dhabi that aims to reach to a Sustainable environment and optimal resource utilization, and the achievement of nationwide priorities and targets related to the waste sector. Throughout the year, “Tadweer” has promoted the waste management sector by launching several new projects, signing memorandums of understanding MOUs, and focusing their efforts on the customer’s satisfaction, thus contributing to a qualitative shift in the waste sector. And to implement the relevant operational and administrative procedures and achieve the aspirations of its customers, thus contributing to support the direction of the Government of Abu Dhabi in contributing to raising the level of government work and raising its efficiency and optimum utilization of its resources and assets.

Among the most prominent achievements of “Tadweer” are the signing of several projects that have a significant positive impact on the waste sector in the Emirate. The most prominent of these are the signing of three contracts for the establishment and operation of hazardous and medical waste treatment plants in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain in partnership with the private sector. This will enhance the level of compliance with the relevant laws and provide environmental solutions to close the operational gaps without the government having any capital or operational costs, which showcases an effective partnership between the private and government sector, working together in order to achieve “Tadweer’s strategic priorities of treatment 100% of medical and hazardous waste. The treatment plants are expected to be operational in the fourth quarter of this year with a capacity of more than 15,000 tons per year, while interim solutions are being practiced until the operation of the treatment plants.

Additionally, and to fulfil the directions of the wise leadership, and following the first steps to implement the national energy strategy by adapting clean energy solutions, the year 2017 witnessed signing a new contract to produce energy from the landfill gas at” Al Dhafra” Landfill, the largest waste landfill in the Emirate, which will contribute to the production of about 5 Megawatts of energy expected on next September this year, This project will help reducing greenhouse gas GHG emissions from landfills and thus contribute to the Abu Dhabi Government's targets for reducing air pollution. The project also contributes to the UAE's requirements to the global climate change agreement, also the energy generated from this project will be supplied for the other future projects in the Al Dhafra landfill. In the same context, a memorandum of understanding MOU was signed with Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA) and CNIM Global Energy Solutions, to execute a high level study on execution a Waste to energy plant in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, supporting Tadweer’s steps to adapt integrated enviro-economic solutions.

To continue the successful journey in 2017, three projects have been finalized to set up used cooking oils recycling plants to produce biodiesel, in partnership with the private sector, which will contribute to the collection of more than 20,000 liters of cooking oil per day. These projects will help treating this type of waste in a proper manner and to transform it into environmentally friendly products with economic benefits, also eliminating the increased concern of disposal of used cooking oil in sewage drains, leading to side effects on the governmental assets.

And of Tadweer Said Engineer Saeed Al Mehairbi, Acting General Manager of Tadweer. "Through these projects, we aim to contribute to the integrated management of waste to contribute to the environmental vision of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and to transform it into an economic value while ensuring that it is treated optimally, which is a major environmental challenge in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and comes in line with Abu Dhabi's plan to achieve a sustainable environment, optimize the use of resources and assets, achieve excellence and innovation in government work and institutional management, and promote economic partnership with the private sector ".

Continuing its efforts on several other levels to achieve its priorities during the year 2017, Tadweer activated the development of the integrated waste management master plan project, in order to achieve this strategic project during the first quarter of this year through the formation of joined team to work on the alignment of the planned outputs. In addition, “Tadweer” completed the development of new regulations, technical guidelines and code of practices for the licensed waste sector private firms, which provide waste management services, helping them to improve the efficiency of operations and improve the services provided to clients in the Emirate.

During the past year, “Tadweer” has sought to increase the level of services provided through its general waste collection and transportation services. The improvement plans have been implemented to increase the level of services provided in several areas in the emirate, including the industrial area of ​​Mussafah, to increase the operational efficiency of the contracting companies and increase the resources allocated by manpower and equipment to contribute to the provision of services of quality that matches the prestigious status of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Also new initiative was implemented to upgrade the efficiency of the demolition and construction waste crushing plant in Al Ain through marketing and disposal of all quantities of aggregate Gravel that have not been sold, which also contributed to the reduction of demolition waste amount sent to landfills by 50%.

And in continuation to its approach to have the client’s satisfaction first and striving to achieve their aspirations and needs with the adoption of excellence and creativity and continuous upgrading, “Tadweer” was honored for its efforts through Abu Dhabi Government Contact Center for Excellence in government performance as one of the best three government entities in response to cases in the criteria of entities with above 15,000 cases, where “Tadweer” was ranked third in this category. This recognition comes as a translation of the continuous efforts to upgrade the services provided and focusing on the customer as a key link in strengthening the institutional work and to meet their needs and expectations. Providing high quality services in line with the Abu Dhabi Government's plans to upgrade government services.
