Al-Ain: The Sixth International Conference on Engineering Geophysics began yesterday, hosted by the United Arab Emirates University under the patronage of his highness Sheikh Tahnoun bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, the Ruler’s Representative in Al Ain Region. The conference brings together leading international researchers in the field of engineering, geology, and physical sciences to advance sustainable development, through sessions titled Global Standards in Engineering Geophysics, CO₂ Monitoring and Management, and Supporting Energy Transition through Minerals and Metals Exploration in the Middle East.
Welcoming delegates to the conference, H.E Zaki Anwar Nusseibeh, Cultural Advisor to the UAE President and Chancellor of the UAEU said, “You connect with the UAE at a time of national joy. This year we rejoiced the success of the UAE Space Mission probe ‘Hope’, we opened the world’s largest global festival, Expo 2020 Dubai, and next month we celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the foundation of the nation. The progress of the UAEU scientific mission and these three events evidence the transformative advance made by the nation. We have achieved much in a very short period. Beginning with little infrastructure, the UAE is now a sophisticated, knowledge-based, modern society with an advanced economy and infrastructure”.
Remarking on the relevance of the Conference to the national agenda for the next fifty years, His Excellency explained the UAE’s ambition to make great advances in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. “We want to make sure that scientific advancement, digital technology, and artificial intelligence produce the innovation necessary to secure the sustainable development of society, industry, and economy”, he said.
The Conference has created a mechanism to encourage participation by young researchers. The ‘Best Student Paper Competition’ will lead to the first awards in Innovation in Geophysics. The competition emphasizes the importance of research in Geophysics to the future development Abu Dhabi Emirate. These plans focus on the quality of the buildings and include measures to ensure safety and wellbeing of the community. His Excellency explained, “it is essential to understand the geological structure of the Emirate, and to locate the source of hazards that might compromise future construction. The UAEU prioritizes research in these fields”.
In conclusion H.E. said, “We welcome you to the ‘University of the Future’ and Al Ain the UNESCO City of Human Heritage. I thank you for keeping in mind the wellbeing of the next generation. It is in their interests that we wish to advance sustainability of society, industry, and economy. It is in their interests that today we must work peacefully and collaboratively together, to create the best ideas and the finest solutions”.
The Director-General of Al-Ain City Municipality, Ali Khalifa Al Qemzi, said that this edition of the conference on engineering geophysics results from its previous successes, which is reflected in the increasing number of the participating experts and specialists and the number and quality of the participating scientific papers. In addition to acknowledging the conference as one of the best five specialized conferences over the last thirty years.
The Al Ain city municipality pioneered this field with its decision to make conducting an engineering geophysics study an essential condition for obtaining projects’ construction license. Through this conference, we aim to concentrate on the recent developments and methods in the field of geophysical and environmental engineering and its applications worldwide.
