The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region has half the world’s reserves of natural gas, but still ranks the sixth in terms of global production, Crescent Petroleum CEO during the Atlantic Council Global Energy Forum 2019 in Abu Dhabi.

With the growing international demand for energy, natural gas has been emerging as the optimal choice for power generation in the 21st century and for being a crucial part of a more sustainable energy mix, Emirates News Agency (WAM) reported citing Majid Jafar as saying.

Switching from coal and oil to natural gas for baseload power generation could rapidly reduce emissions as needed and have a significant impact on the global carbon footprint, Jafar added.

Over 2 billion metric tonnes of carbon were avoided between 2005 and 2016 thanks to the growing use of natural gas, Jafar noted.
