UAE - The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is offering 300 licensing plates comprising four and five digits in its forthcoming 52nd online auction. Registration of bidders starts on Sunday and the bidding will start at 8am on March 4 and will continue for five days.

"Numbers sold in this auction will be subject to a five per cent VAT. The wide public participation in online or open auctions and the positive competition to grab such numbers underscore the importance of holding these auctions in bringing happiness and satisfaction to number plate enthusiasts," said Sultan Al Marzooki, director of vehicles licensing at RTA.

"Participation in the auction requires the client to have an account opened through RTA's website or use the 'New User' link to obtain a Username and Password. For a new registration, the user is required to have either a vehicle registered in Dubai or a driver licence issued from Dubai. For participating in the auction, the bidder is required to issue a security cheque to the order of the RTA amounting to Dh5,000 and deposit it to one of RTA's customers happiness centres at Umm Al Ramool, Bur Dubai, Deira or Al Tawar Municipal Centre.

"Clients also have to pay Dh120 as participation fees through the website (www.rta.ae)" explained Al Marzooki.

"The successful bidder has to clear the due amount within ten working days from the auction closing date by cash or credit card. Cash payments are acceptable up to Dh50,000. For higher amounts, customers can make payment by a certified cheque or credit card. Failure to clear due payments will result in blacklisting the bidders," he added.

Al Marzooki highlighted the importance of online auctions to a large segment of community members who prefer such particular auctions as they find the liberty of selecting their fancied numbers in a hassle-free environment.

"A dedicated team at RTA's call centre has been furnished with all information related to the auction, and stands ready to respond to any inquiries through the toll-free number 8009090," concluded Al Marzooki.

Upgrading to new-look license plate is optional

The RTA said it's "optional" for motorists need to upgrade their vehicle licence plates.

In the latest ad rolled out by the RTA, vehicle owners who own registered number plates are encouraged to "be the first to upgrade" to new-look car plates.

"RTA would like all car owners with owned registered number plates from A to Z to upgrade to the new plate design. And from May 2018, all car owners with unowned A, B and C number plates are requested to upgrade to the new plate design," the latest campaign says.
