More than 500 delegates from industry, government and policymaking will debate how to make informed and responsible investments in an ever-changing technological and geopolitical landscape at the RICS World Built Environment Forum.

The annual summit reconvenes on May 13 and 14 to tackle “The future of investment in real assets” and how we harness new technology to mobilise the private capital investment needed to meet the growing global demand for new infrastructure, real estate and the renewal of existing assets. More specifically; the changing nature of work and workplace, the impact of algorithms and tokenisation, new finance models for energy and transport and investment risk allocation.

Headlining the event is Parag Khanna, named one of Esquire’s “75 most influential people of the 21st Century,” and featured in WIRED magazine’s “Smart List.” He brings a global perspective to the intertwined forces shaping investment in the built environment.

“Across the developed and developing world, cities are assuming an ever-greater role in the overall health, wealth and happiness of the planet’s people,” says Khanna. “At this pivotal point in human history, innovative, ambitious and holistic approaches to issues such as rapidly growing migrant populations and climate change are urgently required – and both the public and private sectors have a vital role to play. In my capacity as a keynote speaker at the fourth annual summit of the World Built Environment Forum, I’m excited about the opportunity to participate in this timely, global discussion.”

With global energy demand, driven partly by rapid growth in developing markets, set to rise by 40% over the next 20 years, and energy security threatened by geopolitical uncertainties; the challenge of increasing flows of capital into energy innovations is pressing.

Dheeraj Bhardwaj, CEO of Mawared Energy in the UAE, will discuss how the diversification of energy sources is changing operating models, and what the renewable sector can learn from more established energy providers in a panel session on ‘Alternative energy infrastructure investment’ at the Summit. Recipient of two Young Scientist Awards by the Government of India for his innovations, Bhardwaj was invited to present his Innovations at NASA, USA.

“It is incumbent on the oil and gas industry to respond effectively to growth in public awareness of – and support for – diversified, renewable energy sources,” says Bhardwaj. “Our sector generated the power that sustained three global industrial revolutions; if sustainable energies are to power future industry, they must first be scalable and investible. At World Built Environment Forum Summit New York 2019, I look forward to lending my thoughts to how the sharing of experience and knowledge can help plot a route forward.”

Over the two days of the Summit in New York, participants will build a picture of how technology is transforming investment in real assets. Their conclusions will outline workable approaches to building public and investor trust as we seek to mobilise more capital into much-needed infrastructure worldwide.
