Kuwait is expected to delay the tendering of a project to build a railway that will be linked to the planned rail network in the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

In a recent notice published on its twitter account, the Kuwait Authority for Partnership Projects (KAPP) said the project has been blocked by failure of the Public Authority for Roads & Transportation (PART) to provide designs for the rail routes.

It said the Municipality has also not yet provided locations for train stations and other relevant sites, adding that PART has requested 24 months to name a consultant to complete design studies for the project.

"Because this project is large and involves massive financial obligations, KAPP has asked the competent authorities to halt measures to appoint a consultant to tender the project until those departments provide all the necessary technical requirements, which are considered a basic part of tendering," the statement said.

The 2,117-km GCC rail network, which has been on the cards for many years, will connect Kuwait and other members--Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman, and provide passenger and freight services.
