Bahrain - A multi-million dinar agreement to build a health centre in Khalifa Town has been signed.

The new health centre, which will be built on a 17,244sqm plot of land, will feature a consultancy department with 12 clinics, a pharmacy, a radiology department, an emergency department, a dental department with six clinics, along with physiotherapy, maternity and paediatric departments.

The key project, worth more than BD5.6m, was awarded to Aradous Contracting and Maintenance, with the agreement signed yesterday with the Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry.

Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Minister Essam Khalaf said the project will be financed by the National Bank of Bahrain (NBB) and will be completed within 18 months.

“This centre is part of the government’s service-oriented projects. The ministry is designing and supervising their implementation for the benefit of various ministries and authorities in Bahrain,” he said in a statement.

“The ministry seeks to support the efforts exerted by the Health Ministry in implementing its programmes and strategic plans to meet the needs of the citizens to obtain treatment and health care in line with the continuous increase in population, while also providing high quality health care services.

“The project was tendered to Aradous Contracting and Maintenance at a total cost of BD5,646,666 – financed by the National Bank of Bahrain – and will be completed within 18 months.”

He added that sustainability requirements of green buildings and the implementation of the energy consumption rationalisation policy were also taken into consideration as part of efforts to conserve the environment and natural resources.

Also present at the signing was Health Minister Faeqa Al Saleh, Southern Governor Shaikh Khalifa bin Ali Al Khalifa and NBB chief executive treasury, capital markets and wealth management Hussain Al Hussaini along with other officials.

Ms Al Saleh said the new complex aims to achieve the aspirations of citizens hoping for a fully-equipped health centre, which includes all medical specifications and provides basic health services.

“This proves the government’s continuous efforts and dedication towards citizens’ health and harnessing all capabilities available for the speedy completion of projects in line with urban expansion and to fit the requirement of the people from the governorates,” she said.

“This model centre will be equipped with the latest medical supplies in accordance with the highest standards and requirements and it will include a reception and health records section as well as a consultancy department with 12 clinics available for doctors.”

NBB chairman Farouk Almoayyed, meanwhile, said they looked forward to building on accomplishments in the field of social responsibility within the health sector as part of plans to make community service a priority.

Support

“NBB is pleased to be part of these efforts to support the Health Ministry, hospitals, health institutions and charities that exert efforts to ensure citizens and residents have access to the latest technologies and health resources,” he said in a statement.

“Social and economic development in general, and in particular the heath sector, is at the heart of the work of NBB through our financial and human contributions.”

The GDN previously reported that Khalifa Town was officially opened in December 2017 and so far more than 2,000 homes have been occupied, with the total due to reach 2,541 by the end of this year.

When completed the development is expected to consist of 6,000 homes, with a total population of 54,000 people.

The development is part of a government initiative launched in 2014, which envisaged the construction of 40,000 social housing units by 2022.
