Bahrain - A specialised multiple sclerosis (MS) centre, the first of its kind in the GCC, will open in Busaiteen in the next two years.

The BD1.7 million facility is being paid for by the National Bank of Bahrain (NBB) and will be located at the Muharraq Medical Complex.

Work is set to start early next year and finish in the fourth quarter of 2021, said Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Minister Essam Khalaf.

A tender for its construction was issued yesterday.

“Developing the medical sector and elevating health services is a priority for the leadership,” said Mr Khalaf.

“For that, plans were made for a multiple sclerosis centre – the first specialised in the field in the GCC.

“Patients suffering from multiple sclerosis have increased in the Gulf since the 1990s and statistics in Bahrain show there are around 700 cases in Bahrain.

“The new dedicated centre will be managed independently.

“We would like to thank NBB for its generous donation to completely fund the establishment of the centre, including the buildings, medical equipment, furniture and its sponsorship of many government projects – mainly in the health sector.”

Designs for the centre have been drawn up by Adel Ahmadi Associates, an engineering consultancy based in Manama.

It will cater solely to patients who suffer from MS, which affects the central nervous system.

The GDN reported last year that the MS centre, which will cover 800 square metres, would include 100 beds.

It will be complemented at the Muharraq Medical Complex by an 85-bed maternity hospital and an elderly care centre.
