Dubai: Winston & Strawn LLP, together with the Legal 500, will tomorrow welcome more than 200 general counsel from some of the most high-profile organizations across the Middle East to the inaugural edition of the Middle East Disputes Summit 2019. The principal focus of the conference will be on exploring how dispute resolution can more effectively serve the needs of businesses in the MENA region while, following recent changes to the arbitration legislative and regulatory framework of the UAE in 2018, the event will also provide the opportunity to explore the extent to which these changes can positively impact business in the region and fuel the growth of Dubai as an arbitration hub for the wider Middle East.

Featuring 30 keynote speakers and panelists, some of the Middle East’s leading counsel  - including Gregor Pannike of Easa Saleh Al-Gurg Group, Dalia Al Sayeh of Honeywell, Sean Yates of China State Construction Engineering Corporation Middle East, Ahmad Zaky Ismail of Saudi Aramco Shell Refinery Company and Bapsy Dastur of Stolt-Nielsen - will take to the stage to exchange insights on topics ranging from cost efficiency and third party funding to selecting the perfect seat for arbitration and identifying potential dispute risks. In addition, Jeffrey Kessler, Winston’s co-executive chairman and co-chair of the firm’s Antitrust/Competition Practice and who is widely regarded as a leading commentator on international antitrust law, will participate in a special ‘fireside’ session - sharing his experience as lead counsel in some of the most complex antitrust, sports and intellectual property law cases and trials in the U.S.

In what is perhaps a “first” for the region, the conference will also hear from the chief executives of the DIFC Courts, Abu Dhabi Global Market Courts and the Saudi Centre for Commercial Arbitration, three institutions at the forefront of driving the change agenda in the regional dispute resolution landscape.

Winston & Strawn Partner and head of Middle East Dispute Resolution and Investigations, Ben Bruton, , said: “We are privileged to be supporting the inaugural Legal 500 Middle East Dispute Resolution Summit. With some of the most experienced general counsel and leading legal minds in the region attending the event, it’s set to be an important forum that will help shape the future of dispute resolution in the Middle East and enable attendees to better understand the changing face of disputes in the region. We are very much looking forward to welcoming the impressive line-up of keynote speakers, panelists and attendees to the event and demonstrating all that Dubai has to offer as a leading centre for dispute resolution.”

James Wood, Legal 500, commented: “For the last five years, we have been engaging with the GC community in the Middle East through various initiatives, including our GC Powerlist series. The demand for a GC-led forum to discuss the unique challenges faced by businesses, particularly in reference to dispute resolution, was clear. By bringing together so many of the leading figures in the market we hope to help shape continued evolution of the in-house profession in the Middle East.”
