Banks and financial services groups based in Nigeria and Ghana swept several Awards categories

Dubai - 10 December, 2015

More than 4,500 votes were cast across the 29 categories in the Banker Africa West Africa Awards 2015 by the readers of the magazine and the registered users of the financial news website www.cpifinancial.net.

Nigerian institutions swept 10 of 15 regional categories while Ghanaian banks took just two. However, Togo-based Ecobank Transnational also stood out, taking 'Best Regional Bank' and 'Best Commercial Bank in West Africa'. Its biggest subsidiary, Ecobank Nigeria, also won 'Best Commercial Bank in Nigeria', but a clean sweep of the category was blocked by Ghana Commercial Bank taking the Commercial Bank title in Ghana.

With the sheer number of significant institutions in the region it was challenging for any one institution to dominate the categories, but FirstBank and Access Bank notably came away with awards in both the Nigerian and regional categories, while Diamond Bank took both 'Best SME Bank' and 'Best Microfinance Bank' for the region.

Foreign international institutions also made a strong showing, with Standard Chartered, Barclays and Citi all taking awards. With a significant lead in the votes, foreign companies Infosys Finacle and CR2 also dominated the financial technology categories.

In all, winners reflected the diversity and evolution of the West African banking sector, with fast-growing country-specific institutions recognised alongside first-tier regional banks.

The Banker Africa West Africa Awards, now in their third year, reflect the core philosophy of the magazine's publisher, CPI Financial, aiming to identify and promote excellence and best practice in financial services.

"The 29 Awards winners were chosen from some 156 nominations across all the categories by their peers in the banking and financial services sector. The winners of the Banker Africa West Africa Awards 2015 are, therefore, recognised not by a small jury but by the industry itself as being leaders in their fields. As such, their performance stands out in an increasingly competitive and exciting market-place," said Robin Amlôt, Chief Executive Officer of CPI Financial.

"The Banker Africa West Africa Awards are designed to reward excellence in financial services, identifying the key players working to help create a prosperous diversified future for all of the region's people, businesses and economies," added Amlôt.
