Award recognizes container conversion as green alternative to traditional construction
Dubai - Smart Box Industries LLC, the region's pioneers in containerised construction, won EGBC 2015 'Green Building System' Award during the recently held ceremony at Al Murooj Rotana Hotel in Dubai. Smart Box won this award for being the manufacturer of the headquarters of Geo-Chem Middle East office at TechnoPark - Dubai, the MENA region's first building made of upcycled shipping containers.
The winners were introduced by Saeed Al Abbar, Chairman of EmiratesGBC, during the ceremony in which Dr. Thani Ahmed Al-Zayoudi, Director of Energy and Climate Change at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made a keynote on green building practices.
According to the EGB Council, the Green Building System Award is in rec-ognition of 'a building system that provides a more sustainable solution to green building construction than traditional construction methods (reinforced concrete frame, poured on site, with block work infill)'.

The 13440 sq ft Geo-Chem Middle East office has been manufactured out of 42 units of 40' high cube containers and meets all the requirements of a typical commercial building. In addition to being made of recycled materials, the building sports a host of energy efficient features, mak-ing it one of the 'greenest' buildings in the region.
The EGBC Awards honour companies that implement sustainable design, construction and/or operation of buildings and structures, and aims to 'help establish a regional model for a sustainable built environment that is world class and replicable.' The awards are an initiative of the Emirates Green Building Council (EmiratesGBC), an independent forum aimed at conserving the environment by strengthening and promoting green building practices.
