Qatar and a major German company yesterday signed an LNG  deal  on the sidelines of the Qatar-German Business Forum. This was announced by the visiting German Deputy Minister of Economic Affairs and Energy, Matthias Machnig.

The Europe’s largest economy started importing LNG from Qatar after a German energy company, E.ON, which is one of the world's largest investor-owned electric utility service providers, signed a contract in 2013.

The new contract, according the Deputy Minister, was signed by RWE, a German electricity company based in Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia, which is expected to formally start importing Qatari gas from early 2018.

“We want a stronger partnership with Qatar, and this is of great interest for Germany because of economical reasons. We want to deepen and diversify our gas supplies. There is a great opportunity for German companies for working together in a wide range of areas, including energy, infrastructure and many other sectors,” Matthias told The Peninsula on the sidelines of the event organized by Qatari Businessmen’s Association in collaboration with the Ministry of Economy and Commerce and German Business Council Qatar.

“There is a lot of common ground where Germany and Qatar can work together for the coming years on the basis of a long term partnership,” added Mathias. Replying to a question about the Germany’s gas consumption and import volume, he said that the exact numbers were not available with him, but gas constitute between 20 and 30 percent of the country’s energy mix. A significant percentage of Germany’s energy comes from renewables (nearly 30 percent) and nuclear, but the share of nuclear energy is declining due to the retirement of existing nuclear power plants.

“The number of our nuclear plants have declined to nine from 21, which are eventually going to be phased out by 2022. We are going to reduce the consumption of coal as well. So the new sources of energy in Germany in future are going to be gas and renewables”, said the German Minister, who is here leading an official trade delegation.

He said that Germany, which is trying to diversify its sources gas imports, is building new terminals to receive gas from Qatar and other countries, along the East Sea and North Sea coasts.Share this post
