Iraq has given the green light for the construction of a new solar power project that will produce 500 megawatts of electricity, the official daily Alsabah reported on Monday.

The project is located in the Southern oil-rich Dhi Qar Governorate, which aims to increase solar power in its energy mix to 1,200 MW, the paper said.

“The Energy Council in the Central Government has endorsed the construction of a new solar power station with a capacity of 500 MW,” the paper said, citing a statement by Dhi Qar’s Governing Council.

It did not provide details of the project, which is one of several solar power facilities planned by war-torn Iraq to tackle a chronic power shortage and slash heavy reliance on energy imports from neighboring Iran.
