"Prof. Tawfik Khoja: We aim at raising the cultural & medical awareness in the Gulf region"

Dubai - United Arab Emirates - The International Family Medicine Conference and Exhibition continues for the second consecutive day at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, highlighting the challenges that the family medicine field is facing and the needs to overcome through cooperation on all levels.

The International Family Medicine Conference and Exhibition is held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance and President of the Dubai Health Authority. The topics discussed during the conference revolved around: Cardiovascular diseases in primary healthcare, Thyroid disease in woman, Childhood Obesity & how to fight it, how to fight against smoking, and the topic of Zika Virus, What Family Practitioners Need to be Aware of and What the International Public Health Community is Doing to Combat the Threat.

The session on Zika virus has discussed how the virus was largely disregarded, thinking that it might cause only minor illness, until reports began to surface of a temporal association between incidence of Zika virus infection and a rise in neurological syndromes such as microcephaly and Guillain-Barré Syndrome. In the last year the geographical spread of reported incidences of Zika Virus Infection has increased, as has evidence of a link between Zika Virus Infection and neurological syndromes, but this link is still not conclusive and there is much still to be discovered about how and when the virus can cause more than minor illness. Equally, clinical doctors and public health professionals need to be vigilant, and to work on measures to both detect incidence of the disease and protect vulnerable populations.

On the sidelines of the 3rd International Family Medicine Conference & Exhibition, The Executive Board of the Health Ministers' Council for Cooperation Council States has launched the website and the 1st mobile application of the Elite Doctors.

The Elite Doctors is considered one of the exceptional portals acknowledged by the medical community under the auspices of the Executive Board of the Health Ministers' Council for the Cooperation Council States. It involves a number of outstanding consultants in various medical specialties. The number of elite doctors in the preliminary group has reached about 50 doctors in various medical specialties.

Prof. Tawfik Khoja, Director General, Executive Board, Health Ministers' Council, For Cooperation Council States said: "This system aims to highlight the elite group of doctors in our countries and to create an effective and interactive relationship between professional doctors and the general community. We are launching it now regionally, and the next step will be extending it to the rest of the East Mediterranean Region."

On another note, The 1st Edition of the Dubai Core Review Course on Cardiothoracic Surgery continues on its 3rd day, which is being held parallel to the 3rd edition of IFM Conference and Exhibition. The London Core Review program provides a comprehensive review of the core information required for surgeons preparing for competency written examination to qualify to practice cardiovascular and thoracic surgery.

Prof. Abdallah Raweh, MD, PhD, Consultant Cardiac Surgeon, Vice-Rector Ludes University Lugano- Swiss, Director of Arab Countries Core Review, commented saying: "This high-caliber cardiothoracic surgery training program being held for the 1st time outside London, has witnessed a remarkable participation from professionals from the region and the world. Dubai, with no doubt, is among the few cities capable of attracting world-class medical events, with  many facilities available, and with the great support of the UAE government and leaders, to bring such global medical training programs to the UAE."
