Bahrain’s aviation sector will usher in a new era with the opening of a $1.1bn new passenger terminal in the coming months.

This was announced yesterday by Transportation and Telecommunications Minister Kamal Ahmed as he carried out an inspection visit to Bahrain International Airport (BIA) to follow up on the progress of construction work.

Mr Ahmed also revealed that a new private aviation terminal for VIPs and private aircraft owners will soon be inaugurated.

“The private aviation terminal will be a major contributor to trade and will support the growth of the tourism and travel sector for decades to come,” he said.

Clearly delighted, he added that the second futuristic phase of the terminal development was on schedule.

“2021 will be a major turning point for the airport,” said Mr Ahmed.

“We are committed to maintaining the current pace of work, completing the second phase on time and ensuring that the construction does not impact airport operations.”

The new terminal will be four times larger than the current facility.

It will be capable of processing 130,000 air traffic movements per annum with a handling capacity of 4,700 bags per hour and further increase the airport’s capacity to 14 million passengers a year in the post-Covid era.

The site has been cordoned off to maintain the highest levels of safety and security.

Mr Ahmed was briefed and updated on the project by Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) officials and representatives of the project’s main contractor, Arabtec TAV.

They highlighted the developments, including demolition work and the removal of internal equipment and installations, floors, ceilings, mechanical and electrical systems, as well as air conditioning systems.

The project work includes a multi-storey car park, a Central Utilities Complex and a fire station.

“The transference of operations to the new terminal will signal a major shift in the kingdom’s aviation sector,” added the minister. “This will be complemented with Fuel Farm Complex operations, including three aviation fuel tanks.”

He further praised the ongoing efforts of Team Bahrain, which started work on the major national development project four years ago.

“The Airport Modernisation Project (AMP) includes several infrastructure development projects that will contribute to the realisation of Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030, laying the foundation for a more sustainable and diversified economy,” said Mr Ahmed.
