JEDDAH - Over 53,000 housing units, including flats and villas, will be ready shortly for distribution in different parts of the Kingdom, the Housing Ministry announced.

"We dont focus on any particular region and our projects cover all parts of the country," said Ahmed Mandoura, a senior official at the ministry in charge of partnership with the private sector.

"The housing units being implemented with the support of the private sector would be handed over to beneficiaries three years after signing the contracts," he told Al-Hayat Arabic daily.

He said the projects are implemented following the demand and supply rule.

He said the number of beneficiaries in the main cities of Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam has reached nearly 300,000 with Riyadh having 143,000, Jeddah over 114,000 and Dammam 42,000.

"There are different products in these three cities including villas, town houses, and developed plots."

Mandoura disclosed the ministrys plan to develop plots in new areas in the three cities to establish housing projects in cooperation with the private sector.

"The agency for technical affairs at the ministry is currently finalizing five projects. They are the Riyadh airport project, Dammam North, Jeddah Airport, Jeddah Housing and Prince Fawaz project."

There are three projects for sale in Riyadh and four each in Dammam and Jeddah. "We have established partnership relationship with 160 real estate developers around the Kingdom."

He added: "Our relationship with these developers differs from one another depending on their capabilities and desire to carry out projects in different regions."

The projects in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam are being implemented with the support of 32 developers. "We have completed 90 percent of the project in north of Dammam and 80 percent of the project in south Dammam and it involves infrastructure work," he explained.

Dammam North will have a total of 7,622 housing units while Dammam South will have 16,210 units, he said, adding that the Dammam projects would supply "the first wave of flats" in the city.

Speaking about sales, he said 52 percent of units being constructed in Dammam have been booked. "We have marketed 1,400 town houses in Al-Ahsa, marking 100 percent sales," he said.

"A large number of people are waiting for the second marketing drive," he added.
