The Minister of State for Food and Water Security of the United Arab Emirates, Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, conducted a two-day working trip to Kazakhstan on June 10-11, 2021.

On her first day, Her Excellency attended the ceremony of humanitarian aid distribution launched by Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. This campaign named 100 Million Lunches is operating in 30 countries, including Kazakhstan.

The Minister held meetings with several high-level officials of Kazakhstan including Chairman of the Agency for Strategic Planning and Reforms, Governor of the AIFC Mr. Kairat Kelimbetov; Deputy Chairman of the Agency for Strategic Planning and Reforms, H.E Zhaslan Madiyev; and First Vice-Minister of Agriculture, Aidarbek Saparov. Upon the initiative of IOFS, Ms Almheiri also met with Secretary of the Security Council Mr. Asset Isekeshev.

Together with the representatives of Al Dahra Holding, DP World, Fish Farm and other large companies, she met with the Prime Minister H.E. Askar Mamin, who noted the high level of strategic partnership between the countries. The Prime Minister stated that agro-industry is one of the most promising areas of cooperation with UAE. The countries are already implementing a number of agricultural joint projects that include setting up meat production and processing farms.

During the visit, DP World and the Kazakh National Railway Company signed an agreement to develop a dry port project in southern Kazakhstan that would help to diversify imports and expand trade exchanges.

Onwards, the Minister paid a visit to the L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University (ENU), a Kazakh national research university. The Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Mr. Erkin Ongarbaev mentioned that the university offers Oriental and Arabic Studies that are popular among students and noted that ENU is ready to strengthen cooperation with the universities of the United Arab Emirates. The Gumilyov Eurasian National University awarded Her Excellency an honorary doctorate to celebrate her work in the area of global food security.

The Minister’s visit concluded with signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Director-General of the Islamic Organization for Food Security, H. E. Yerlan Baidaulet. Ms Almheiri stated: “With the signing of this agreement at the close of our visit, the UAE Food and Water Security Office is looking forward to advancing a new era of intra-OIC agribusiness to help deliver food security for all.” She also expressed hope that the Memorandum would help to achieve common goals in food security and expand Kazakhstan’s potential in this area through the technical expertise from the UAE. The document will be valid for two years from June 2021 to July 2022 and may be renewed with the consent of the parties. After the ceremony, the UAE delegation traveled to the IOFS headquarters where they were briefed on the IOFS strategic framework by the Director of Programs and Projects Office.
