BEIRUT: Lebanon confirmed 940 coronavirus cases and 13 deaths Wednesday, raising the total number of registered cases to 31,778.

Of the new cases, 923 were registered among the local population and 17 among travelers from abroad. There have been a total of 328 deaths due to coronavirus complications since the illness was first detected on Feb. 21.

The local test positivity stood at 8.2 percent, with positive cases detected among 13,110 PCR tests carried out on the resident population in the last 24 hours.

Lebanon in September has so far seen three record breaking days in the number of new infections, with a high of 1,006 cases registered on Sept. 20. The cash-strapped country, whose coronavirus hospital wards are nearly at full capacity, surpassed 30,000 total cases Tuesday.

The head of Parliaments Health Committee MP Assem Araji said in comments published Wednesday that Lebanon had lost control of coronavirus but that a lockdown was still not being considered at this time.

There is no coordination between the concerned ministries about the preventive guidelines, Araji told local channel Al-Jadeed. I think weve lost control of coronavirus.
