The Dubai Shopping Festival will begin a week early this year so residents can "make most of the school holidays", its organisers have said. The annual shopping extravaganza will be on from December 17, 2020, to January 30, 2021.

According to the academic calendar announced by the Ministry of Education last month, students will get their winter break from December 13 to 31 this year.

Last year, the festival was held from December 26, 2019, to February 1, 2020.

The Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment (DFRE) said the six-week festival will offer "family fun and entertainment, live concerts, unique markets, art installations and stage shows" in addition to "super sales, unmissable promotions and chances to win life-changing prizes".

Every participating mall and event venues will have "high health and safety standards in line with local regulations" to keep shoppers safe from the spread of Covid-19.

Shopping destinations across the city are now operating at 100 per cent capacity, Visit Dubai said on its website. "Shopping malls and centres have implemented stringent checks and are required by law to carry out strict sanitisation processes in a frequent manner."

The 26th edition of the festival will feature "concerts by world-famous music stars, stunning light and fireworks shows, entertainment in malls and activations by big name retail brands". It will also have "extra special celebrations on New Year's Eve and into 2021", the DFRE said.

Mega raffles will offer shoppers chances to win luxury cars and cash prizes. The DFRE said it will make "big announcements" in the coming weeks.

In July, organisers had announced that the Global Village would return for its silver jubilee edition on October 25. Authorities promised to provide the "best park experience" to all its guests despite challenges arising from the Covid-19 pandemic.
