The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention on Wednesday reported 1,083 cases of the Covid-19 coronavirus, along with 970 recoveries. One death was also reported.

More than 103,100 new Covid-19 tests have been carried out, the ministry said, taking the total to over 9 million.

UAE's Covid-19 cases are down 21 per cent in the July-August period, it was announced yesterday.

The UAE ranked first in testing its residents for Covid-19 in these two months, a top official said. The country also saw its Covid mortality rate go down by 5.7 per cent. The official UAE government spokesperson, Dr Omar Al Hammadi, said: "August saw more than two million lab tests nationwide (2,018,274) - the eighth highest in the world. There was an increase of 36 per cent in comparison to the tests conducted in July, when over 1.4 million tests were done." Only 0.47 per cent of those tested were positive for the virus. The official reiterated the government call to avoid gatherings.

Earlier today, it was announced that entertainment centres and gaming halls in Abu Dhabi will have a maximum seating capacity of 60 per cent when they reopen.

Other measures include intensive sterilisation throughout the day, frequent temperature checks for all employees, encouragement of payment via e-channels, mandatory masks and gloves for all staff, a physical distance of 2metres between staff and customers and mandatory masks for customers.

Most importantly, all employees will be required to take a Covid-19 test.

Meanwhile, it was also announced yesterday that all students studying in grade 6 and above in Abu Dhabi will e-learn from the safety of their homes. The Emergency, Crisis and Disaster Management Committee to Combat Covid-19 in Abu Dhabi said distance learning will be applied for these high school students as a precautionary measure against the spread of the virus. Students in grades 9 to 12 have been given the option to attend in-person classes as required to take international exams. These classes are those that are needed to qualify them for university.
