Doha: Qatar Foundation (QF) recently hosted a two-day orientation event – titled ‘Marhaba’ – for students and alumni of Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) and QF’s eight partner universities.

The event was held at Multaqa (Education City Student Center), and served as an opportunity to introduce new and returning students to the various centers and facilities housed at Education City, including Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, Education City Golf Club, QatarDebate, and Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, as well as help to promote a sense of unity.

Freshman Ziyad Hamad, enrolled in Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar's Business Administration course, hopes to become an entrepreneur one day. Explaining why he chose to study at QF, he said: “I am used to Qatar’s vibrant community, and I wanted to stay close to my family and friends. Why go abroad when world-class education is available at your doorstep?”

Enjoying Marhaba, he added: “It was a really useful event as not only was it informative, but it was also fun. It will help prepare me for my new academic life.”

Amal Hadad, a student at Texas A&M University at Qatar (TAMUQ), said she chose to attend a QF university so she could remain near her family. Explaining her choice in degree – Electrical and Computer Engineering – Amal said: “I am fascinated by technology, I am good at math and physics, and it's been my dream since I was very small to be an engineer.

“I attended Marhaba today to learn more about Education City and its diverse offerings, as well as meet new people.”

Also studying Electrical and Computer Engineering at TAMUQ, Maryam Al Manai explained that she chose to study at QF because Education City houses world-class universities with handpicked degree programs. “Over the next few years I am looking forward to meeting new people from all over the world. And I’d like to maintain a high GPA,” she added.

As part of the event, students also participated in a series of fun and educational activities, such as learning about environmentally-friendly alternatives to single-use plastic bags.
