DUBAI: Two aspiring young designers have bagged the Dh390,000 ($106,195) scholarships granted by UAE-based Kart Group in association with Dubai Holding, fully funding their studies at the Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation (DIDI).
The two winners are Fatima Al Busaeedi, who designed a creative entertainment-based game around music to help astronauts stay stimulated in space, and Mohammad Bassam, who showcased complex technical skills and adopted new software in his entry. They have enrolled for the four-year Bachelor of Design programme (Fall 2019 intake) at DIDI. Fatima and Mohammad participated in a competition to design an innovative, space-compliant game for astronauts to play on their journey to Mars or during their time in space.
Congratulating the young designers, Mustafa Khamash, managing director of Kart Group, said: “Kart Group is proud to support DIDI in its first-ever scholarship challenge, which applied innovative design thinking and cutting-edge technology to a real-life problem faced by UAE astronauts. Mustafa Khamash was himself a beneficiary of a life-transforming scholarship to pursue his own design education in Venice, Italy, and sees this as a way “to pay it forward”. Speaking on the Design for Good initiative, Khamash added: “It aims to motivate the design community veterans to invest time and money in developing young talent to consider design as a viable and rewarding career.”
A delighted Fatima Al Busaeedi commented: “It is truly my dream to be part of this growing field and support the UAE’s vision in becoming a leading contributor to innovation on the global stage. I am hugely grateful to have the opportunity to study at DIDI. My family really pushed me to choose this institution as it’s unique and we all feel it is the right place for me to grow in this field.”
Mohammad Bassam said: “DIDI is a very innovative university and I am honoured to have been chosen for this scholarship. There are very few universities in this region which teach in such a unique way and I cannot wait to begin my studies in the fall.”

The Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation (DIDI) is the UAE’s first institution dedicated exclusively to design and innovation, across a broad range of areas from product design to app design, futuristic fashion and gaming.
Launched earlier this year, the “Scholarship Challenge” gave aspiring young designers the chance to showcase their talents and creativity to win the two fully funded scholarships. Their designs had to promote the physical and mental wellbeing of future space travellers, enabling them to perform athletic activities, maintain muscle capacity, bone density as well as cardiovascular health, especially during lengthy space travels.
