Dubai, UAE - The British University in Dubai (BUiD), the leading research – based University, organised the Third International Conference on Arabic Computational Linguistics (ACLing 2017) in collaboration with Al Nile University.

The 2-day conference, which aimed to promote Arabic language and coordinate efforts in this area of research, included several specialised sessions with participation from local and international academics and researchers. The conference accepted 37 research papers, which are now published in the Procedia Computer Science by ELSEVIER. A panel of 25 Academics and Researchers from 21 countries reviewed the papers submitted for the conference, thereby ensuring the high quality of these Academic papers.

BUiD’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abdullah Alshamsi, welcomed the conference’s participants and said, “The British University in Dubai is proud to be at the forefront of addressing this key issue in Arabic computational linguistics and in doing so we are spearheading the efforts to coordinate the promotion of Arabic Language. These efforts gain additional importance in the wake of the UAE’s push towards artificial intelligence. We still have a long way to go on this front but things looks promising with the quantity and quality of research we have seen so far”.

ACLing is a series of international conferences devoted to Arabic Computational Linguistics (CL). It aims to bring together leading academics, scientists, researchers, practitioners and linguistics professionals from all over the world to exchange new ideas and the latest results in Arabic Computational Linguistics and Natural language processing (NLP). This field has become increasingly important, as more and more Arabic information is now available through the Web, Social Media and Intranet services.

Prof. Khaled Shaalan, Head of IT Master’s programmes and PhD Computer Science at BUiD, stressed the importance of Arabic computational linguistics and said, “The information revolution and the rapid development in technology and computation in all aspects of life have created a real need for adopting Artificial Intelligence approaches in the automatic processing of natural languages”. He added that the Arabic language was not isolated from this revolution, nor the rapid development in the field of computational linguistics, it underwent a number of automatic processing at different levels, including phonological, morphological, grammatical, textual and semantics. He mentioned that the characteristics and peculiarities of the Arabic language require efficient and effective methodologies in order to develop Arabic computational linguistics applications.

One of the keynote speakers at the Conference Dr Hazim Hajih of American University of Beirut spoke about the history of how Artificial Intelligence (AI) came into being and that its roots could be traced back to 11th Century Arab Scientist Al Jazari. In addition, how the concept of AI is based on deep learning similar to that of Neuron Network of Human brain. In an hour long presentation he covered various topics such as AI Models of Taxonomy, Opinion Mining in Arabic (OMA), AI and Arabic linguistics complexity, AROMA,RNTN concepts etc. His presentation can be accessed on BUiD YouTube channel along with other presentations from the ACLing 2017 conference.

BUiD as a research- based University is committed to the UAE’s vision of a knowledge -based economy. The University has created and disseminated knowledge through its faculty and students’ research and through organizing such academic conferences and events.
