The Saudi ministry of transport has completed several vital projects worth more than 4 billion Saudi riyals ($1.07 billion) across different parts of the kingdom, a statement released by the ministry said.

The ministry completed 108 kilometres (km) of highways, 907km of double roads, 659km of single roads, 809km of agricultural roads, 35 upper intersections and one tunnel so far this year.

The key projects finalised in 2017 include construction of Salboukh Bridge that connects Northern and Western districts of Riyadh, as well as the final phase of the road that leads to the Omani borders and facilitates trade activity between both countries.

The ministry also highlighted constructing a 61km road project that connects the Riyadh/ Dammam Highway with Abu Hadriyah/Dammam road and with Dammam/Jubail road. The project is set to ease traffic congestion in Dammam city, connect Jubail Industrial City with Riyadh and facilitate greater trade activity with other GCC countries.

A report published by building consultancy Faithful + Gould in August showed that contract awards in Saudi Arabia were up 15 percent year-on-year in the first half of 2017, standing at $16 billion.

Although some schemes are being re-prioritised or cancelled, increased activity in privatising assets such as airports is likely to bring more projects to market. The report's author, regional development director David Clifton, said that its full-year forecast of $27 billion worth of project awards "may need to be revised upwards should the Crown Prince’s commitment for major awards later this year occur".
