In Collaboration with Some of The Region's Most Important Energy Companies

Abu Dhabi, UAE - Shell and the Emirates Foundation hosted the Social Investment Workshop today, joined by some of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region's most important energy companies among others, to discuss the social investment sector. The workshop took place at the Jumeirah Etihad Towers Hotel in Abu Dhabi.

Organised jointly between Shell and the Emirates Foundation, the event brought together professionals from the social investment sector to network and discuss key trends in the area of Social Investment, share best practices from across the MENA region andlearn new tools that support effective social investment portfolio management.

This regional event hosted Shell companies from the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Eqypt, Iraq and the Netherlands. The workshop also had participants from the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and its group of companies, the Basrah Gas Company (BGC), the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC), Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), Oman LNG, Oman Oil, the Saudi Arabia Petrochemical Company (Sadaf) and the Saudi Aramco Shell Refinery Company (SASREF); as well as representatives from Dolphin Energy, the Abu Dhabi Investment Company (ADIC), the National Bank of Abu Dhabi (NBAD), Mercy Corps and CH2MHill.

This is the second joint workshop that takes place in Abu Dhabi in partnership and participation of ADNOC and its Group of Companies, where ADNOC's senior representatives shared their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) experience and best practices that are aligned with the country's vision of a knowledge-based economy.

Shell's longstanding partnership with Emirates Foundation, which is in line with the global energy company's social investment vision, dates back to the foundation's inception in 2005 under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi.

2015 marks 10 years of successful partnership between Shell andthe Emirates Foundation. Over the years, Shell and the foundation have jointly delivered many successful social investment initiatives focusing on human capital development including science and technology, education, capacity building and community engagement. One of the most prominent joint engagements has been the Emirates Foundation 'Think Science' Fair, which promotes Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education and careers among youth in the UAE, aligned with the nation's Vision 2021.

Speaking on the occasion, Sana Bardawil, Shell's Director of External Relations for the Middle East and North Africa, said,"We are proud of our long partnership with the Emirates Foundation, which has over the years, enabled us to jointly implement many successful programmes bringing benefits to the community at large, and young people especially. This regional workshop is a novel way for us to build on our existing partnerships as well in the energy sector across the MENA region. We look forward to combining the expertise of our Joint Venture partners in the area of Corporate Social Responsibility, sharing best practices across all of our organisations to understand better how we can jointly design, create and evaluate the impact of our CSR initiatives in all the countries we are in."

Clare Woodcraft-Scott, CEO of Emirates Foundation said, "Emirates Foundation and Shell have had a long-standing and successful partnership, which dates back to 2005. This partnership has provided immense value to the UAE youth and has been pivotal in supporting our transition from traditional to venture philanthropy, as well as in creating long term and sustainable social impact in the UAE."

"The nature of the partnership between the Foundation and Shell goes beyond financial support - The social investment workshop, which focuses on exchange of technical expertise and knowledge, is just one example of how we have come together with Shell to create sustainable value," she added.

At the event, Mr. Mohamed Al Shamma, Vice President Public Relations at ADMA-OPCO, made a presentation on behalf of ADNOC and its Group of Companies. "It is an honour for ADNOC to be part of this important workshop and share with peers our perspective as well as best practices in the area of Social Investment."

"As part of their social responsibility, organizations need to focus more on community development and growth through investing in projects that benefit the society," said Mr. Al Shamma.

"This is precisely where this gathering would provide us with the opportunity to explore a greater role for the oil and gas industry in this domain," he concluded.

About Emirates Foundation
Emirates Foundation was launched in April 2005 as an initiative of His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces. It is chaired by HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs.

In 2012, the Emirates Foundation was re-launched under the name "Emirates Foundation for Youth Development" as an integrated national initiative that seeks to invest in UAE youth. The new strategy uses the model venture philanthropy with a view to impacting the lives of young people in the UAE positively and permanently. To achieve this, the Foundation will work in three key focus areas: social inclusion; community engagement; and leadership and empowerment. It will seek to identify, educate and inform the public about challenges facing UAE youth while developing sustainable, enterprise-based solutions to social issues and motivating young Emiratis to volunteer, participate and give back to society.

Emirates Foundation works to enhance partnerships between private and public sectors, in order to develop sustainable ways of helping young people in the UAE make an active contribution to the country's development. EF is funded through contributions from the Abu Dhabi government and private sector companies.
