Moving towards achieving a more sustainable community

Muscat, June 2nd 2015: Demonstrating its ongoing commitment to protecting and preserving the environment, The Wave, Muscat has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Oman Waste Water Services Company, Haya Water, for the management of green waste generated by the Integrated Tourism Complex's (ITC) burgeoning community.

According to the three year agreement signed by Hawazen Esber, CEO of The Wave, Muscat, and Eng. Hussain bin Hassan bin Ali AbdulHussain, CEO of Haya Water, all grass, plants and tree cuttings collected at The Wave, Muscat will be treated at Haya Water's pioneering and award-winning Kala Composting Plant in Al Amarat. On-site it will be recycled and used to produce Kala Fertiliser, a compost product that can be used in agriculture, landscaping and home gardening.

Hawazen Esber, CEO of The Wave, Muscat, stated, "We are committed to transforming the social, environmental and economic development taking place at The Wave, Muscat by applying international best practices to each different part of the project. We believe that our agreement with Haya Water will inspire other institutions to adopt similar environment-friendly practices."

The initiative has a range of benefits including diverting organic materials from landfills, reducing the production of greenhouse gases, preventing soil erosion and cutting the need for pesticides and fertilisers.

"Sustainability is at the heart of our community's design, construction and management strategy; with green practices implemented throughout the project," commented Esber.

Haya Water's CEO, Eng. Hussain AbdulHussain, said, "Haya Water is very pleased to sign this environmentally responsible agreement to recycle the green waste produced in the parks, gardens and walkways of The Wave, Muscat. We applaud the eco-focused vision of this green community and congratulate it on its dedication to sustainability, helping to create a better, healthier, greener future for all."

Eng. Hussain added, "Haya Water and The Wave, Muscat are partners in protecting the environment, and by signing this MoU we have taken action that will be followed by results through implementing best practices. Due to the high quality of 'Kala' Compost the local market's share value has increased consistently on a yearly basis. The sales to production ratio continue to reach 100%, with our output being completely sold out. In order to satisfy the increasing demand for 'Kala', one of our main priorities at present is concerned with locating other sources of green waste to increase production."

This initiative is the second collaboration between the two companies, following a long-standing agreement that has seen Haya Water provide Almouj Golf with treated effluent water. This water is used in the world-class golf course's irrigation system, conserving the Sultanate's water reserves in line with the nation's Water Security Strategy.
