Abu Dhabi-UAE: In a bid to enhance the efficiency of integrated waste management services, Abu Dhabi Waste Management Center (Tadweer), in partnership with Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (QCC), hosted a workshop to highlight the professional standards for personnel working in sweeping, collecting, transporting, and disposing general waste in the emirate.

Organised as part of Tadweer’s efforts to enhance synergies between the government and private sectors in the Emirate, the workshop highlighted the Center’s commitment to maintaining the competitiveness and continued development of the waste management sector to contribute to the emirate’s sustainable growth. This will in turn create an enabling environment for specialised companies to boost investments in this promising and vitally important economic sector.

The workshop outlined the measures taken by Tadweer to improve the quality of life across the Emirate, and ensure that the environmental service providers in the emirate adhere to relevant regulations and safety standards. Tadweer also highlighted its efforts to incorporate quality management and innovation in the Center’s operations to constantly develop its service delivery model and enhance its financial sustainability.

His Excellency Dr Salem Al Kaabi, General Manager of Tadweer, said: “This workshop is aligned with Tadweer’s strategic objective of stepping up collaboration with its partners from the government and private sectors to develop standardized measures to protect the environment and promote sustainable development in the emirate. "

He added: "The workshop comes as a successful outcome of our continued collaboration with QCC to achieve sustainable development through developing service delivery and streamlining its mechanisms. In addition to advancing our personnel’s professional standards, such efforts will enable the emirate to create a safer, healthier and more sustainable environment.”

For his part, Saif Al Bakri, Director of Conformity Services at QCC, said: "The development of personnel certification schemes by QCC articulates its continued efforts to promote quality culture and develop a highly efficient quality infrastructure in Abu Dhabi in line with the objectives of Abu Dhabi Plan that aims to build a competitive, sustainable and globally-integrated economy.”

Al Bakri added: “QCC developed the personnel certification scheme for services provided by personnel working in sweeping, collecting, and transporting general waste in collaboration with relevant authorities, including Tadweer which is mandated to license the environmental service providers in Abu Dhabi. The certification scheme sets the professional requirements and technical specifications for Tadweer personnel to ensure the compliance of their services to the highest quality and safety standards.”

Al Bakri also noted that the certification scheme is mandatory for all environmental services providers practising sweeping, collecting, transporting, and disposing general waste in Abu Dhabi. It requires workers to complete a four-stage certification process that includes testing, issuing certificates, licensing, and continuous monitoring. Personnel who successfully complete the scheme and pass the tests conducted by accredited centers are awarded QCC’s trust mark.”

Tadweer is the key government entity responsible for all activities related to the development of waste management services in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, including the collection, transportation, treatment and disposal of waste in a safe, efficient and economical manner. The Center is also tasked with carrying out pest control, educating communities about the significance of protecting the environment, and encouraging them to adopt sound environmental habits to drive sustainable development.
